GTO - It hasn't broken yet

The GTO rolled over 70K this month. The grind of a daily driver seems to roll right off it, just as the miles seems to slip by at its preferred cruising speed of 85mph. I’ve never owned a GM car before now, but I don’t think I could expect better from any manufacturer. A 2004 anything with 73K miles would be forgiven for any number of defects like rattles, cluster lights burnt out, blend doors stuck. Not to mention various engine or transmission issues.

Kinja'd!!!

Instead I’ve got two scratches in the paint and a side bolster on the driver’s seat fading from sliding in and out. No rattles, no interior bits falling off, and every light works. The engine, despite being sinfully dirty from constant driving doesn’t consume oil throughout the 7,000 mile intervals and doesn’t ever need lose coolant either.

Kinja'd!!!

Now, I’ve got parts wearing out that I need/want to replace, but I don’t count that on my list of problems. Just opportunities. Sure, the suspension feels like it’s just large rubber bands because the shocks and springs are inadequate from the factory, but I can fix that with coilovers for less than $1k and then another $300-$400 for polyurethane bushings that were reknowned for premature failure even in the late 2000's. The car is heavy, and Holden didn’t seem to plan for that.

There lots of little things I want to change but I think I hesitate to start down that path because of the inherent quality of the car already. See, if I add a part or piece to the car, I feel it has to come up to the standard of the rest of the car. My exhaust in my Mustangs was a mashup of BBK, Borla, and Flowmaster. But in this car I feel compelled to invest. $300 headers have become either Hooker or Stainless Works longtubes with a custum made mid-pipe with cutouts. A simple CAI and tune has become an engine build and a dyno tune from this guy - James Karger.

In the end, I think it comes down me becoming more appreciative of what the car can do and how unique it can be and already is. And me realizing I need a second vehicle.

Very nice. I dd my 06 GTO M6 IBM. Great cars. Mine need a little work due to previous owners, but other than that I agree this is the nicest car I have owned and probably the most reliable in its price range. Thank you GM!

You sound like a VW owner with that “no problems at 70k miles” talk.

Well I expected the LS1 to be fine, but I figured I’d be replacing small electrical or plastic bits due to age.

Age, not mileage. Also aged GM vehicle. Rattles were expected before now.

On a 2004? No way. I’ve owned a ‘63 Corvair and ‘66 GMC that still had stock wiring. The headlight switch is broken on the GMC though. I’ve even owned thirty year old BMWs that spent there lives in the desert that still had tip top wiring and plastic (other than the dash). My E30 had 220k miles on it, and was still great mechanically and electrically.

I have an 04 YJ also. Daily drove it for 8 years and brought the miles from 33k to almost 140k. Very little in the way of issues/repairs. It does amazing at the job of daily duty, and takes on miles and miles like a champ. (I once took a trip where I drove nearly non-stop 950 miles, and then back a week later. Zero complaints.)

I also like how well-rounded it is and haven’t wanted to mess with that. Konis and stock height Lovells springs have made the ride and handling great.

She’s been sitting for months now while I get the motivation to replace the driveshaft center carrier bearing. I’m almost to the tipping point where I can’t stand not driving it. I have another DD now, and another toy, too.

Hmmm... Why bother. Nobody wants an aged car (it was 20 years old already in 2004) anyway.

70K is just getting broken in for a GTO. lol Mine is well passed a 100K with no major problems. I like to upgrade parts when having to replace something. Keep the leather conditioned for the interior, and a shop could fix that tear for you. Keep on driving it!

Certain cars are notorious for rattles. Mustangs of most (all?) generations are among them, if I’m not mistaken.

I’ve had a lot of old cars.

‘05 Mustang Convertible 140k- No rattles other than intermitting ticking from the left soft-top latch

‘91 Miata 160k- No rattles or squeaks

‘98 Civic 300k- No rattles or squeaks until I replaced the struts and then there would be a ‘clunk’ over speed bumps

‘97 Riviera 210k- Left window regulator bolt backed out a little and would rattle with the window down.

‘02 Miata 110k- Soft top frame rattles sometimes. Door cards rattle from bass through the door speakers

‘93 Sentra 205k- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA entire car is one giant rattle

It’s my daily driver. Put another 150k on yours and then let’s compare rattles. :P I’m curious to know how mid-’90s GM stacks up against mid-’00s GM.

We can just skip the speed comparison...
